Marin Jänes presented Baltic German nobility research at an international German studies conference

From 22 to 24 July 2026, the international conference of the Society for Intercultural German Studies (Gesellschaft für interkulturelle Germanistik), Diversität – Divergenz – Dialog: Germanistik im Kontext von Global Citizenship und Wissenschaftsdiplomatie, was held at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand’s oldest and leading university, in Bangkok.

The conference brought together scholars of German Studies from around the world. Its programme featured nearly one hundred presentations organised into five thematic sections: linguistics in the field of tension between diversity and divergence; diversity, marginalisation, and global citizenship in literature; literature and literary translation; language, culture, and literature mediation through traditional, media-based, and AI-supported approaches; and German as a foreign language and regional developments in higher education.

In the section Diversity, Marginalisation, and Global Citizenship in Literature, Marin Jänes, a member of the research project „Connections, transition, change: nobilitas haereditaria ac litteraria in the emergence of early modern literature in Polish and Swedish Livonia“, presented the paper Adel und Alterität: Die (Selbst)Darstellung der Adelschaft in deutschbaltischen Anekdoten. The presentation examined the construction of the (self-)representation of the Baltic German nobility in German-language anecdotes, analysing it from the perspectives of alterity and multilingualism.
